Frequently Asked Question about HSK

  Q: What is HSK ?

A:  Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) or the Chinese Proficiency Test is a standard examination for evaluating the proficiency of one’s modern Chinese language. HSK is designed specially for those people–including foreigners, overseas Chinese and students from ethnic Chinese whose first language is not Chinese.

________________________________________

Q: Who Designs HSK Tests ?

A:  All HSK tests are designed by the HSK Center at Beijing Language and Culture University located in Beijing, China. The Center’s entire work, from making tests to issuing certificates, is supervised by the National Commission of Chinese Proficiency Test under the Ministry of Education of China.

________________________________________

Q: How Long Has HSK Been in Existence?

A:  HSK was first offered in 1990. Since then, many test centers have been established in China and in nearly twenty foreign countries, and HSK has been held regularly in each test center every year.

________________________________________

Q: Is HSK in Simplified or Origional Chinese?

A: Both simplified and origional Chinese version of HSK tests are available to test takers. Please specify your perference when filling out your registration form.

________________________________________

  Q: Who Issues HSK Certificates?

A:  All HSK certificates are issued by the National Commission of Chinese Proficiency Test, which is under the Ministry of Education of China.

________________________________________

Q: How Useful Are HSK Certificates?

A:  Your HSK certificate(s) can serve the following purposes:

1) To certify that you have obtained the required Chinese proficiency to enter a college or university in China as an undergraduate or graduate student;

2) To certify that you have obtained the required Chinese proficiency and thus, you may be exempted from taking certain Chinese language courses in your institution (if your institution agrees to grant you the permission). At UBC, HSK scores can be used to waive foreign language requirements. A minimum passing score, which is irrelevant to HSK certification, is to be set by the Department of Asian Studies to satisfy this specific local demand.

3) According to the regulations set forth by British Columbia Ministry of Education, External Language Assessment credits can be granted upon obtaining certain HSK score / certification. For detailed information, please visit: http://www.bced.gov.bc.ca/graduation/courseinfo/cid.pdf (Page 92-97).

4)  To serve as reference when you apply for a job position that requires a certain level of Chinese competency.

5) To win scholarships to study in China .

6) To test your Chinese proficiency if you are learning the language.

________________________________________

Q: Will My HSK Certificate Expire?

A:  Your HSK certificate is like a “diploma”: once you receive it, it becomes your property and it is  valid permanently. However, if you wish to use your HSK scores to apply for admission to a college or university in China, your scores are good for two years only (from the date you take the test).

________________________________________

Q: How Many Categories and Levels Are There?

A:  HSK is divided into three categories: Basic; Elementary-Intermediate; and Advanced.

There are altogether eleven score levels:

Basic includes Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3.

Elementary-Intermediate includes Elementary Level 3 (this level overlaps Basic Level 3), Level 4 and Level 5; Intermediate Level 6, Level 7 and Level 8.

Advanced includes Level 9, Level 10 and Level 11.

________________________________________

Q: Which Level Do I Need to Achieve?

A:  If you intend to study in a college or university in China, and you plan to apply for an undergraduate program in arts (e.g. Chinese literature, history, philosophy and traditional medicine), an ” Intermediate Level C ” certificate (representing Language Level 6) is required. If you wish to apply for an undergraduate program in other majors, an ” Elementary Level C ” or ” Basic Level A ” certificate (representing Language Level 3) is a must. You should hold an ” Advanced Level C ” certificate (representing Language Level 9) if you plan to apply for a graduate program. Without proper HSK certificate, you will have to take Chinese language courses at the relevant institutions in China before you are allowed to be enrolled in an academic program.

If you wish to use your HSK scores as evidence to be exempted from taking Chinese language courses in the United States, you should contact the specific institution about the possibility of doing so.

Q: What Is the HSK Scholarship?

The Chinese HSK Authorities have established the HSK Winner Scholarship to financially aid outstanding test-takers to study Chinese language, culture, history and philosophy at a Chinese university. Scholarship recipients enjoy free tuition, free accommodation and free textbooks. They will also receive the same living allowance as Chinese graduate students on the Chinese Government Scholarship Program. There is a bottom line established below Level 9 for HSK (Advanced) mainly out of the need to set a criterion for awarding certificates and not to assess the basic, elementary or intermediate proficiency levels. Therefore, scores in this range is of no reference to determining the basic, elementary or intermediate Chinese proficiency levels.

3. Interpretation of the score levels of HSK (Advanced)

There are 11 score levels in HSK, of which Level 3 to 5 signifying the basic, Level 6 to 8 the elementary and intermediate and Level 9 to 11 the advanced.

Level 9 The candidate has the advanced (low) Chinese language competence, which can be acquired after 3000 hours or more of regular modern Chinese language learning (or other Chinese learning experience equivalent to this). And this is the minimal standard to be qualified for the jobs requiring using Chinese for communication and the standard by which the HSK (Advanced) Certificate Grade C is awarded.

Level 10 The candidate has acquired the advanced (middle) Chinese language competence. This is the moderate standard to be qualified for the jobs requiring using Chinese as the communication language and the standard by which the HSK (Advanced) Certificate Grade B is obtained.

Level 11 The candidate has possessed the advanced (high) Chinese language competence. This is the higher standard to be qualified for the jobs requiring using Chinese for communication and to be viewed as being qualified for a translator at the intermediate level. And it is the standard as well by which the HSK (Advanced) Certificate Grade A is conferred.

III. Prerequisites to be awarded the HSK Certificate

1, The total score should be higher than the minimal level in the related grade.

2, Three of the four section scores, namely, listening, reading, writing and the oral test, shall exceed the minimal level in the related grade.

3, Two of the five section scores is allowed to be less than the minimal level in the related grade (only one of the section scores in listening, reading, writing and the oral test is allowed to be lower, however), but shall not be less by more than one level. If so, one can only get a certificate of the lower grade.

4, None of the section scores should be lower than the bottom line level under Grade C.

The Elementary and Intermediate Chinese Proficiency Test

HSK (Elementary-Intermediate)

I. Test Content

There are 4 sections in HSK (Elementary-Intermediate) as shown in the table below:

Sections Question Number Duration
1 Listening 1-50 About 35 minutes
2 Grammar 51-80 20 minutes
3 Reading 81-130 60 minutes
4 Cloze Test 131-170 30 minutes

II. HSK (Elementary-Intermediate) Scoring System

1. About the scores of HSK (Elementary-Intermediate)

A section score of HSK (Elementary-Intermediate) is a scale score with 50 as the score mean and 15 as the standard deviation, while the total score is a scale score with 200 as the score mean and 60 the standard deviation. These scores show the relative position of the candidate in a standard sample group. The table below helps to locate the relative position of a candidate in the whole group. The right column indicates the percentage occupied by those whose scores are lower than the corresponding scores in the standard HSK reference group. Therefore, as it shows, the total score of HSK (Elementary-Intermediate) is not simply an add-up of the section scores.

The above three preconditions are set in an effort to encourage the all round development in all aspects of language skills, and an imbalanced development in certain language skills will affect the candidate in getting an HSK certificate.

II. HSK (Basic)scoring system

1, A section score of HSK (Basic) is a scale score between 0 and 100, with 50 as the score mean and 15 as the standard deviation. The total score ranges between 0 and 300 as the total of the section scores. The section scores show the relative position of the candidate in a standard sample group. And the table below helps to locate the relative position of a candidate in the whole group. The second line indicates the percentage occupied by those whose scores are lower than the corresponding scores in the standard HSK reference group.

4, Interpretation of the score levels:

There are three score levels for HSK (Basic) and their interpretations are as follows:

Level 1: The candidate has acquired the basic (low) Chinese competence. The candidate is able to understand simple sentences and express simple ideas and capable of simple communication in his or her daily life and study. A Chinese learner who has mastered about 600 common Chinese characters and the corresponding grammar can reach this standard, which is also the criterion for HSK (Basic) Certificate Grade C.

Level 2: The candidate has acquired the basic (middle) Chinese competence that can meet the demand of basic daily life, a certain range of social communication and study to some degree. This is the criterion for HSK (Basic) Certificate Grade B.

Level 3: The candidate has acquired the basic (higher) Chinese competence and can fulfill the minimal requirements in Chinese proficiency to be admitted to study in Science, Engineering, Agriculture, and West Medicine in Chinese universities for a Bachelor’s Degree. This is also the criterion to grant HSK (Basic) Certificate Grade A, which is equivalent to HSK (Elementary) Certificate Grade C.

General Introduction of HSK

China’s Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi, known as HSK or the Chinese Proficiency Test is a standardized test at the state level designed and developed by the HSK Center of Beijing Language and Culture University to assess the Chinese proficiency of non-native speakers (foreigners, overseas Chinese and students of Chinese national minorities). HSK consists of the basic Chinese proficiency test (HSK Basic), the elementary and intermediate Chinese proficiency test (HSK Elementary-Intermediate) and the advanced Chinese proficiency test (HSK Advanced). HSK is held regularly in China and other countries each year. Certificates of HSK will be issued to those who have secured the required scores.
The Chinese Ministry of Education has established China National Committee for Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK)(CNCCPT). The Committee is the supervisor of HSK and the issuer of the Chinese proficiency certificates. CNCCPT has an office called Office of China National Committee for Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK), which takes care of the HSK affairs together with the HSK Center of BLCU.
1. About Applicants of HSK
HSK (Basic) applies to those learners with the basic Chinese proficiencies, namely, those who have taken 100 to 800 hours of regular modern Chinese learning (including those with the equivalent learning experiences). HSK (Elementary-Intermediate) is for those who are at the elementary and intermediate level in Chinese proficiency, i.e. those who have taken 400-2000 regular hours of modern Chinese courses (including those whose proficiency in Chinese is similar to that standard). The HSK (Advanced) is designed to measure the Chinese proficiency of those who are proficient in Chinese, i.e. who have taken 3000 regular hours or more modern Chinese learning (including those whose proficiency in Chinese is similar to that standard).

2. The functions of HSK Certificates
(1)to certify that the holder has acquired the required Chinese Proficiency to enter a college or university as an undergraduate or graduate student.
(2)to certify that the holder can be exempt from taking the Chinese language course depending on the level of certification.
(3)as a basis for the employers to evaluate the Chinese proficiency of the job applicants.

3. HSK organizer and certificate issuer
CNCCPT is the organizer of HSK.
And the CNCCPT Office and the HSK Center of BLCU are both in charge of the HSK affairs.

6. Preparation for HSK
As a standardized test of general language proficiency, HSK is not based on any particular textbook or course of study. Therefore candidates may refer to any textbook in preparing for the test. Nevertheless, it is important that all candidates read HSK Test Syllabus carefully, a guide for the pre-test preparation. It contains an introduction to HSK, a sample HSK test paper and the key, HSK glossary and a CD of the sample listening questions.
To be admitted to the test room, every examinee will be required to present his or her admission ticket and a photo-bearing ID certificate (ID card, passport or a residence permit). No candidates will be allowed to enter the test room without the afore-mentioned two evidences. The candidates whose admission ticket is missing can only be admitted to the test room till the ticket is reissued (with handling charges). Tape recorders, cameras, dictionaries, notebooks, textbooks and other unnecessary objects mustn’t be taken into the room. Mobile phones and MP3 shall be switch off and put inside bags, which shall be placed at an area designated by the invigilators.
Candidates arriving five minutes late (since the start of listening comprehension test) may be admitted to the testing room and start the test right away. If examinees are 5 to 35 minutes late for the test, they may not start until the next section begins and no extra test time is to be offset for the late arrivals. Thirty-five minutes after the beginning of the exam, no candidates will be admitted to the test room.

7. Things to note during the test
(1)Once in the test room, candidates shall put the admission ticket and the ID certificate on the upper right corner of the desk for the inspection of invigilators. All the activities of the candidates are subject to the instructions of the supervisor.
(2)Duration for HSK (Basic) is about 135 minutes; HSK (Elementary-Intermediate) about 145 minutes without break; and HSK (Advanced) about 180 minutes with a break after the written test. In principle candidates shall not leave the test room during the course of the test. If so under some exceptional circumstances, the candidate shall gain the permission from the supervisor.
(3)HSK has a strict control of the time limits for each section of the test and candidates shall answer the corresponding test questions within a given time period and avoid jumping to the later sections or turning back to the previous ones during the test.
(4)Candidates shall not take the test papers or answer sheets out of the room, or tear apart, replace or copy the contents of the test.
(5)Candidates shall abide by the test instructions and rules and those who violate the rules will be warned and not even allowed to continue the test by the organizer.
(6)Before answering the test questions, candidates shall fill in their names (Chinese and English), the test paper code, nationality code, the test center code and the candidate’s number according to the admission ticket. Candidates should also draw a bar like this [■] to indicate their sex. The test paper code is on the upper right corner. The nationality code is a fixed number created by the test center for each country and nationality for all HSK tests. For example, the code for Japan is 525, France 610, etc. The candidate’s number is a serial number of registration. The test center code is the number for the place where the test is held. For example, the admission ticket of a Japanese student called Kimula Yuko is like this.
While filling in the information, candidates should write the numbers first in the blanks on the left and then draw a bar on the corresponding numbers on the right like this [■].

The HSK Admission Ticket

(7)Answers should be made by drawing a bar like this: [■].
Please note that the bar should be drawn thick and bold to make sure that the card-reading machine can recognize the answers. The candidate should bear the consequences due to his or her failure in following the instructions about how to answer the questions.

8. The Issuing of HSK Certificates and Test Report Form
The HSK certificate and test report form will be mailed to the HSK test centers by the organizer within two months after the test. Candidates may obtain certificates and test report forms either by collecting them in person at the test center or by mail from the test center.
The retention period of the certificate and the test report form is 2 years. If the candidate does still not claim them after 2 years, the organizer will not keep them any longer.

9. Regulations on reissuing test report forms
Candidates may come to the HSK Center of BLCU and can require a reissue of the test report form for the purpose of employment or application for study in a university within the valid period of the test result. There are handling and cost charges for it.

10. Period of Validity for HSK Certificates
The HSK certificate has a permanent validity, whereas the accompanying test report will only be valid for two years (beginning from the date of the test session) as the certification for foreign students to enter a college or university in China.
